Puncturing the myths of acupuncture

There are many myths surrounding acupuncture, but the World Health Organization (WHO) now has agreed and cited over 40 conditions that acupuncture can treat. It actually can treat more than just 40 really, the list is literally endless.

Some of the conditions that have shown to have a relief from acupuncture include: migraines, sinusitis, the common cold, tonsillitis, asthma, inflammation of the eyes, drug addictions, myopia, duodenal ulcer, gastrointestinal disorders, trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial pain), Meniere's disease (ringing in the ears), tennis elbow, paralysis from stroke, speech aphasia (loss of language abilities due to brain damage), sciatica, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid conditions, arthrosis, menstrual cramps, fibromyalgia, low back pain, diseases of the eyes, nerves, muscles, heart, digestion and reproduction organs, and the list goes on ... phew!!

Acupuncture has also been reported to be a very good substitute for anesthetic as it has considerably less side effects. Below is an interesting article on how this ancient method was used in place of surgical anesthesia:

In 1979 in China, a major surgical operation was carried out using only acupuncture for the relief of pain. The patient was a 58-year old university professor with a brain tumor located near his pituitary gland.

Throughout a four-hour operation that included the removal of a portion of the skull to reach the tumor, the patient remained fully conscious, alert, and relaxed. He received only a mild pre-operative sedative and the acupuncture consisted of the insertion of five needles attached to a low-voltage battery. He felt no pain, and his pulse and blood pressure remained stable.

When the surgery was completed, the patient stood up, thanked the surgeon, and walked out of the operating room without any assistance!
